"What a terrific read! Magic and myth rustle sonorously in the pages of Vonnie Winslow Crist's latest collection, River of Stars. Here is a book rich in mysteries which the poet has made tangible. Exciting stuff!" - Clarinda Harriss, English Department Chair, Towson University, and Director of New Poets Series & BrickHouse Books

"Like rivers surging toward a larger sea, details leap toward metaphors of understanding about the human condition. Crist's poems are marked by her desire to see the macrocosm in the microcosm. Through fable and myth and legend she explores the larger meanings of the human condition, the hungers of the human heart." - Michael S. Glaser, Maryland State Poet Laureate, Professor of English, St. Mary's College, and Director of St. Mary's Poetry Festival

"These poems by Vonnie Winslow Crist are populated by dark birds & wolves that haunt a nature transformed by myth & magic. Here are the rhythms of moon & tide orchestrated into a concert of language steeped in the love of mystery.... There is throughout a sense of reverence for & celebration of moment to moment life as a gift & sacrament...." - Dr. Gary Blankenburg, English Teacher, Catonsville High, and Director Eclectic Press

Essential Fables

Poems & Illustrations by Vonnie Winslow Crist

"Roads are a continuing presence in Essential Fables - the poems offer neatly and emphatically presented observations, or scenes, almost as if the writer were hurrying by. The poems, slight of discourse, are nevertheless sharply focused, pithy, and memorable." - Mary Oliver, Pulitzer Prize winning poet

Readers, I challenge you to buy 1 (or more) of the 3 books I’ve got listed with AuthorsBookshop and help raise money for wounded soldiers: http://tinyurl.com/vwcrist-books

For each of my books (Essential Fables, River of Stars, & Lower Than The Angels) purchased through Authors Bookshop, I’ve pledged $1 to Books for Boots up to $2,000.

If you haven’t heard of this non-profit organization, check them out. The money donated to Books for Boots is used “to help greviously wounded war heroes” in VA hospitals where it’s used for special needs and emergencies (including helping families of the soldiers with travel costs when they make
a bedside visit).

Why would I be interested in donating money to this organization? First, it’s a great way to show support for veterans who were injured while serving our country. Plus, I have a son who’s recently returned from serving in Iraq. He was lucky and wasn’t injured — but a number of other soldiers he served with weren’t so lucky. I feel it’s a small thing I can do for the young men and women who’ve volunteered to serve, and have been wounded doing so.

So, if you’re looking for a good collection of poetry or an anthology of science fiction & fantasy stories at a reasonable price for yourself, to give as a gift, or to donate to your local library — buy one of my books, and
I’ll make a donation to this worthy cause: http://tinyurl.com/vwcrist-books

MAKE ME WRITE A CHECK FOR $2,000! And pass this on to others who’d be interested in helping injured soldiers.
